CUT FABRICS
Cut pieces in the following order.
Designer Valerie Langue made her
triangle-squares and Flying Geese
units larger than necessary and
trimmed them to the correct sizes with
her custom-made template set. To use
this method, cut 3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares instead of
the 3^3 ⁄ 8 " squares, 2^1 ⁄ 4 " squares instead
of the 2^1 ⁄ 8 " squares, and 4" squares
instead of the 3^3 ⁄ 4 " squares listed in
cutting instructions.

From assorted blue prints, cut
25 sets of:
▫ 2—3^3 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 1—3" square
▫ 16—2^1 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 4—1^3 ⁄ 4 ×3" rectangles
From assorted cream prints, cut
25 sets of:
▫ 2—3^3 ⁄ 4 " squares
▫ 2—3^3 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 8—2^1 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 4—1^3 ⁄ 4 " squares
From navy print A, cut:
▫ 42—1^3 ⁄ 4 ×42" strips
From cream-and-blue print, cut:
▫ 21—1^3 ⁄ 4 ×42" strips
▫ 3—15^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, cutting each
diagonally twice in an X for 12
setting triangles total
▫ 2—8" squares, cutting each in half
diagonally for 4 corner triangles
total
From navy print B, cut:
▫ 9—4^1 ⁄ 4 ×42" strips
From navy print C, cut:
▫ 9—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.

(^1)
Gather one set of matching blue
print pieces (two 3^3 ⁄ 8 " squares, one
3" square, sixteen 2^1 ⁄ 8 " squares, and
four 1^3 ⁄ 4 ×3" rectangles) and one set of
matching cream print pieces (two 3^3 ⁄ 4 "
squares, two 3^3 ⁄ 8 " squares, eight 2^1 ⁄ 8 "
squares, and four 1^3 ⁄ 4 " squares).
(^2)
Use a pencil to mark a diagonal
line on wrong side of each blue
print 3^3 ⁄ 8 " square and 2^1 ⁄ 8 " square.
(^3)
Layer a marked blue print 2^1 ⁄ 8 "
square atop a cream print 2^1 ⁄ 8 "
square. Sew together with two seams,
stitching^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side of marked
line (Diagram 1). Cut apart on marked
line; press open to make two small
triangle-squares. Each small triangle-
square should be 1^3 ⁄ 4 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make
16 small triangle-squares total.
(^4)
Using marked blue print 3^3 ⁄ 8 "
squares and cream print 3^3 ⁄ 8 "
squares, repeat Step 3 to make four
large triangle-squares (Diagram 2).
Each large triangle-square should be
3" square including seam allowances.

Blue has always been a favorite color of mine. I based
this quilt on a blue-and-white 1870s quilt I own because I
especially love the combination. —Valerie Langue, DESIGNER
