This week we pay a visittoApril 1983

Gordon Brake’s images of Newhaven took a bit of a bashing

YOUCANfeelthepositivevibescomingfromthisApril,
1983 issue– asin positivetransparencyfilm.Firstlythe
regularFeedbackfeaturewasdesignedwiththeimages
setin slidemounts.Thecovermaysay‘Whypicturesare
rejected’butin truthit wasjustthoseof poorGordonBrake,
whosepicturesweretrashedbyAP’sresidentcritic.
ThebigfeaturewasAP’stestof thenew,improved
Cibachrome-AII process.Cibachrome-Ahadbeenall
therageasa positivetopositiveprintingprocessfor
transparencies,aimedat homedarkroomusers,because
it producedverysharp,saturatedprintsontheglossiest,
shiniestpaperit is possibleto imagine.Butit wasextremely
temperamental,whichmadeit hardtogetconsistent
results.Cibachrome-AII wasmuchbetter,foundAP’s
JohnWilmott.‘Thenewstuffis marvellous,’heenthused.
‘Muchmoremellowandpleasantthanitspredecessor.’
Littlementionwasmadeof Cibachrome’shighlynoxious,
sulphurouschemistrywhichnotonlyburnedthrough
your drainpipes but your lungs too, if handled incorrectly.
