Shackleton,Surrey.Weoftenthinkof LandGirlsas
beingparticularlyassociatedwithWorldWarTwo,but
TheWomen’sLandArmy(WLA)wasoriginallysetup
in 1917beforebeingdisbandedat theendof theFirst
WorldWar.It reformedin June 1939 andmadea
significantcontributionto domesticwarefforts.Withthe
necessity to grow more food at home, rather than rely
onforeignimports,butwithmanymaleagricultural
workersjoiningthearmedforces,it waswomenwho
wereneededforthenewruralworkforce.Atfirstthe
WLAwasstaffedbyvolunteers,butconscriptionstarted
in December1941.Atitspeakin 1944,morethan
80,000womenwereworkingasLandGirls,whodida
varietyof jobsin allweathersandconditions,and could
be directed to work anywhere in the country.
