Icy scenes
at Mars’

north pole
The European Space
Agency’s Mars Express
orbiter is still sweeping
over the Martian surface,
continuing to capture
amazing, high-resolution,
bird’s-eye images in the
process. In this photo, Mars
Express ventured over the
planet’s north pole and
imaged its frozen ice caps.
Mixed in with the white
of the ice are the dark red
troughs and depressions,
revealing the rusty shade of
the Martian surface below.
Further to the left of the
image are signs of clouds
emerging, indicating that
small storms are arriving
to kick up surface dust into
the planet’s atmosphere,
causing an alteration in
global appearance.
