THE DRESSES
1 SCARLETT JOHANSSON
The double nominee — for
Marriage Story and Jojo
Rabbit — added $2.5 million of
Forevermark diamond jewelry
to her corseted Oscar de la
Renta dress.
2 CAITRIONA BALFE
“She’s one of the most
elegant women I know,” says
Balfe’s stylist, Karla Welch,
of the Ford v Ferrari actress,
who looked statuesque in
a diaphanous bow blouse
and silk bustier dress by
Valentino Haute Couture. “I
am obsessed with the Niwaka
pearls we paired with it.”
3 CYNTHIA ERIVO
“I asked Cynthia what her
dream Oscars dress would be
and she told me, ‘I just want
to feel magical,’ ” says Erivo’s
stylist, Jason Bolden, who
called on Atelier Versace to
create the Harriet nominee’s
glitzy asymmetrical gown. “We
took two diamond earrings
from Piaget and made them
into ear cuffs.” During the
show, the best actress and
best song nominee performed
“Stand Up” from Harriet,
which she co-wrote with
Joshuah Brian Campbell.
4 NATALIE PORTMAN
The actress, who with
Timothée Chalamet presented
best adapted screenplay
to Taika Waititi for Jojo
Rabbit, dressed in Dior Haute
Couture. Portman’s ensemble
included a cape, worn on
the red carpet, which was
embroidered with the last
names of this year’s snubbed
female film directors: Greta
Gerwig, Lulu Wang, Lorene
Scafaria, Alma Har’el, Marielle
Heller, Melina Matsoukas, Mati
Diop and Céline Sciamma. She
accessorized the statement
look with diamond and
black lacquer Cartier jewels.
