God’s Playground. A History of Poland, Vol. 1. The Origins to 1795

(C. Jardin) #1

NOTES 433

  1. Philip Longworth, The Art of Victory: the life and Achievements of Generalissimo
Suvorov, 1729-1800 (London, 1965); K. Osipov, Alexander Suvorov: a biography
(London, 1944). In present-day Poland the destruction of the Polish state after
Kosciuszko's Rising and the Massacre of Praga by the Russian Army, are subjects of
special political sensitivity. Works on them rarely pass the censor.

  2. Lutoslanski, op. cit. No. 157.
    33. 12 Nov. 1794, PRO-FO 62/8.
    34. 1 Jan. 1795, PRO-FO 62/9 No. 1. In this same correspondence, letter No. 3 reports that
'Prince Riepenin informed his Polish Majesty that this Kingdom and Republicke no
longer existed'. These words are strikingly reminiscent of Molotov's statement to the
Polish ambassador in Moscow on 17 September 1939.
    35. 18 Jan. 1795, PRO-FO 62/9. Unnumbered.
