In the Polish language, it was popularly referred to by the affectionate diminu-

tive, the Kongresowka: 'the poor little creation of the Congress'. (See Map 9.)

At the same time, it had to be granted that the Kingdom's prospects were not

entirely bleak. Its population was destined to multiply rapidly, reaching over 6
