TWENTY YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE 301(OUN) operating from sanctuaries in Germany and Austria, launched the cam-
paign of sabotage and murder which in the 1930s undermined all foreseeable
hopes of reconciliation. The assassination in 1931 of Tadeusz Hotowko
(1889-1931), a prominent socialist theoretician and associate of Pilsudski, and
in 1934 of the Minister of the Interior, Col. Bronistaw Pieracki (1895-1934), pro-
