HARPER’S BAZAAR JULY 2018 81

Tired of constantly having to
hold her bag in her hands, Gabrielle Chanel
(ever the innovator) gave women their first shoulder
bag with the Chanel 2.55 and freed their hands for better things—such
as layering and stacking armfuls of Chanel’s latest Coco Crush
jewellery collection.
Launched in 2015, exactly 60 years after the 2.55 ascended the throne as one of
the key bags to own (a title that is only shared by a handful of perennial classics such as the
Kelly, Lady Dior, Speedy and Peekaboo), the Coco Crush saw the House’s iconic matelassé
motif being placed front and centre on a range of rings and cufs that bore the familiar rhombus
pattern—allowing this signature leifmotif from Chanel to hang from women’s shoulders, as well as
decorate their wrists and ingers.
The collection was released on Net-a-Porter for three weeks and marked the irst time either brand
had dipped their toes into an e-commerce venture for ine jewellery. The partnership paid of: Three of
the six designs (including the US$20,500 cuf) were sold out within 24 hours of its release. Jewellery, like
fashion, is an emotional buy; and while the price points are much higher, it was clear that such easy access
to purchase something so precious from Chanel made it all the more tempting, especially when it was just
a clickaway. (Until then, it was only beauty products that Chanel made available online.)
This year’s Coco Crush additions include a beige gold bracelet, a multi-band ring and, for the irst
a range of necklaces—a petite ring pendant with a chain that loops through it on either side.
ything is available in yellow, white, and the brand’s proprietary beige gold, with a choice
iamonds for women looking to add a discreet touch of sparkle to their everyday wear. Then,
e’s the ive-row ring that envelops the inger with dainty bands of alternating white and
low gold and diamonds for a statement that’s feminine and assertive at the same time.
Nevermind that its quilt motif is instan l
recognisable as Chanel. Its ability to ground a loo
with its highly-stackable form makes the Coc
Crush collection one you’ll be lusting afte
for a long time to come. Plus, now, yo
can truly wear the matelassé howeve
and wherever, you please.
