EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES

CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019 –

FACTS AND FIGURES

The 2019 European Universities Championships was another

milestone season for EUSA, which celebrated its 20th anniversary

year in style as a record number of participants took part in the

biggest EUSA Championship sports programme to date.

A total of 21 different sporting
competitions made up the 2019
Championship programme,
which took place at 16 separate
events in 14 host cities in nine
different countries across
Europe.

The Championships, which
started in 2001 and have been
organised biennially since 2011,
began on June 23 with both the
EUSA Golf and EUSA Badminton
Championships, which took
place in Antequera, Spain and
Lodz, Poland, respectively.

The month of July saw a total
of 13 different events taking
place across Europe before the
very last Championship, EUSA
Rowing in Jonkoping, Sweden,
which brought the season to
a close over the first week of
September.

Four new sports were introduced
into this year’s Championship
programme, namely Water Polo,

Beach Handball, Orienteering
and Kickboxing, which formed
part of the Combat Sports
Championship in Zagreb, Croatia
which for the first time was
made up of four different sports:
Judo, Karate, Kickboxing and
Taekwondo.

Two cities hosted a European
Universities Championship for
the first time: Bydgoszcz in
Poland, where EUSA Handball
took place, as well as Jonkoping
in Sweden, which played host to
the 11th edition of EUSA Rowing.

The two oldest sports in the
programme, Basketball and
Volleyball, were hosted for the
15 th time following their first
instalment as the first two
Championships ever organised
by EUSA in 2001.

In total, 5 242 participants
from 570 universities from 43
different countries participated
in the 2019 European

Universities Championships,
making it the largest edition
of the Championships in EUSA
history following the previous
total of 4 132 participants in
2017.

As was the case in 2017, EUSA
Football topped the highest-
attendance list with a total of
613 participants, an increase
of 110 participants compared
to 2017. EUSA Rowing was the
second-most attended event
with 504 participants, followed
by Karate with 446.

EUSA would like to thank all
participants and congratulate
all those who achieved success
in this year’s Championships,
while extending our utmost
appreciation to all local
organising committees and
volunteers, European sports
governing bodies and the
International University Sports
Federation for their support.

Following the culmination of
the Championships, the German
University Sports Federation
topped the Most Active NUSA
results chart, with the French
University Sport Federation
just behind in second place
and the Portuguese Academic
Federation of University Sport
in third.

Based on the results achieved
according to each participating
country’s national body, the
French University Sport
Federation won the Most
Successful NUSA award,
followed by the German
University Sports Federation and
the Sports Students’ Union of
Ukraine.
