Thecaterpillars’gutbacteria
candegradeandprocessthe
plasticasa traditionalfood
source,producing
biodegradableglycolasa
metabolicby-product.These
glycolexcretionscouldbe
reducedbyantibiotic
treatment, a study has found.

It is hopedthatthese
‘plastivores’mayholdthekey
tobetterunderstandinghow
thebiodegradationofplastic
works,andmayevenassistin
reducingthevolumeof
plastic in landfills.
