➜ CAPETONIANM
Apart from Ed Sheeran, I have
no idea about the noises
produced by any of those
mentioned in the first list. I’ve
only ever heard of Ariana
Grande and that was in the
context of the Manchester
bombing. Another huge vote
for Andreas Vollenweider, and
one of my personal favourites,
Rodriguez. I also like Celtic music–
Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Enya.
➜ RAVEAROUNDTHEWORLD
I only listen to minimal techno.
➜ CANUCKLAD
It really depends on my mood. If
I’m wanting to try to grab a nap I’ll go for
something chronically boring, like Ed
Sheeran or Sam Smith, or similar bland,
template-created nonsense.
Otherwise it’ll be catching up on my
favourites, like the Clash, the Police,
Texas and the Style Council. Sprinkle in
a bit of Rod Stewart and Annie Lennox
and I’m as happy as a pig in...
➜ LUGANOPIRATE
I tend not to listen to music in-flight, but
do enjoy podcasts, such as Desert Island
Discs, Just a Minute, etc.
➜ TOM OTLEY
My favourite playlist on Spotify is Erased
Tapes: NTS Radio.
➜ SAILANDFLY
I used to fly Lufthansa mostly and the
audio selection was my favourite part of
the AVOD system. There was always
something in its club or world music
selection I would later download. I used
to play Carmina Burana during landings.
➜ SWISSDIVER
Darn, I am getting old... my sleeping pill
is called Dark Side of the Moon. It works
like a charm!
WHAT MUSIC DO YOU
LISTEN TO IN-FLIGHT?
➜ MARK CASWELL
A recent survey by flight comparison site
jetcost.co.uk shows that Ed Sheeran is
the most popular artist to listen to
in-flight, followed by Khalid, Taylor Swift,
Ariana Grande, Sam Smith, Billie Eilish,
Imagine Dragons, Post Malone, Shawn
Mendes and Lauv. We have a feeling a
similar survey of our readers might result
in a different list – what do you tend to
listen to on your flights?
➜ ESSELLE
I’ve been a big fan of contemporary
harpist Andreas Vollenweider for many
years. His music is the perfect
companion while flying, especially when
waking up, having breakfast and passing
the time before landing at the end of a
long-haul flight.
➜ SKYHIGH
I love pop and dance hits, especially
1980s and 1990s chart classics. I also like
the boarding music played by Pakistan
International Airlines, Cathay Pacific,
Aer Lingus and Turkish Airlines.
➜ STEVESCOOTS
I have a wide taste in music but when
flying it tends to just be some soft
classical to doze me off to sleep.
➜ TOMINSCOTLAND
When I used to fly Emirates, I loved its
compilation of chart number ones dating
back to the early 1950s (before my
musical time, I should say). Great
nostalgia kick. Now, I have downloaded
an eclectic mix on to my phone and,
depending on mood, listen to anything
from Beethoven to James Galway, the
Wolfe Tones and Blondie – common
theme? Nothing very contemporary.
➜ MARTYNSINCLAIR
Any soul music, as
well as the likes of
ELO, Santana, Pink
Floyd and musicals.
➜ JOHNNYG
Original Tamla
Motown, Otis Redding,
Temptations. I love
’70s music, ELO, ’60s
surfing, but mostly
listen to a wide range
of audiobooks.
➜K1NGSTON
PinkFloyd, Ed Sheeran,
Coldplay,classical; I just turn the
volume down and sail away on a musical
journey across all genres and decades.
➜ BPP
Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and his
contemporaries, almost anything
pre-1830ish. Hector Berlioz and Max
Bruch. My great loves are the Tudor
composers, including Thomas Tallis,
Michael East and Orlando Gibbons. I
can listen to Pavarotti and Placido
Domingo for hours. I always carry a
USB stick with all of my favourites –
saves searching.
➜ CHEERUP
I’ll listen to pretty much anything from
Frank Sinatra to Faithless, depending on
what I need to get done. However, for
take-off I always listen to the same song:
Master of Puppets by Metallica –
superstition is a wonderful thing!
➜ SAMI
Kate Bush. No one comes close to her
ethereal voice and music as your plane
sails through the clouds.
➜ SAS
Indian music. Lata Mangeshkar, Shreya
Ghoshal and Alka Yagnik are my
favourites from Bollywood.
