Southern Comfort

A Texas couple wanted to bring a sense of New Orleans to their spartan condo in the city

W

hen designing a
New Orleans pied-
à-terre for a pair of
Texans, designers
Bill Brockschmidt and Courtney
Coleman sought to combine bril-
liant color with an appreciation
for the city’s legacy of artistry.
The condo, in a high-end French
Quarter development, had a mod-
ern, loft-like feel that the own-
ers, who are in their 60s and 70s,
thought lacked any real New Or-
leans vibe.
“The first thing they said was,
‘This is not what New Orleans is
to us. We want to be immersed in
the city’s atmosphere,’ ” says Mr.
Brockschmidt, who with his part-
ner is based in New Orleans and
New York. “It was then up to us
to interpret that and come up
with something that was a kind of
saturated New Orleans style, but
also comfortable.”
To that end, design elements
were sourced from local shops
and Southern artists.
Here are some details from the
living room and kitchen, which
cost around $140,000.

1.The wallpaper is a 19th-
century ashlar pattern in
pink and green. One of the
homeowners is a geology
enthusiast and loved the
striations in the pattern.
Despite being a historic
design, “it looks modern in
its scale and proportion,
and has unusual colors,”
says Ms. Coleman.//Price:
$32,500 for material and
installation, from Adelphi
Paper Hangings

2.The four magnolia oil

paintings hanging over the
sofa are by the Southern
artist John Woodrow Kel-
ley, who is a friend of the
designers. “We thought
that his magnolia paintings
would be appropriate for
the setting here, but also
really dramatic,” says Ms.
Coleman. “We loved the
scale of the flowers
against the wallpaper.”
//Price:$15,400

3.For seating, two chairs
were found from local New

Orleans antique dealers.
The sofa was made by a
company the designers had
worked with previously.
“With the wallpaper being
so striking, we thought we
could unify the upholstered
furniture with slipcovers
made of ticking,” says Mr.
Brockschmidt.//Price:
$9,740 for sofa from
George Smith, $2,470 for a
19th-century armchair from
Uptowner Antiques, $3,250
for a vintage bergère from
Karla Katz Antiques. All

slipcovers are from Leonel’s
Upholstery Inc.

4.Jute carpeting is used
throughout the home but
in the living room it lays
below a 19th-century
French Abusson carpet.
“It marks the center of
the seating area. We loved
getting that turquoise
blue color in the middle
of the room. Also, the style
of that carpet seems so
appropriate for New Or-
leans,” says Ms. Coleman.

//Price:$3,500 for jute
area rug from Merida
Studio, $11,400 for Aubus-
son carpet from Richard
Afkari

5.The ottoman is custom-
designed by the designers.
It has painted legs and a
leather top.//Price:$2,425

6.A bright green lamp
with a gilded bronze base
was found in New York. “It
has a modern character,
but the fittings are an-

tique,” Mr. Brockschmidt
says.//Price:$6,800 from
Objets Plus Inc./Daniel
Barney, shade is from Just
Shades

7.The pink stools are up-
holstered with a historic-
inspired woven fabric.
“There’s no dining room in
this house, so they sit in
these chairs all the time.
They needed to be com-
fortable,” Mr. Brockschmidt
says.//Price:$8,000 from
Artistic Frame
