role for the recovery of the Japanese economy, which is the major concern
of the general public of Japan, rather than the Senkaku Islands.
Paradoxically, the more the Abe administrative wishes to restore national
power in order to compete with the Chinese economic and military
growth, the more necessary it is to improve the relations with China.
On September 11, 2013 it marked one year since the Japanese
government bought three of the five Senkaku islands. No anti-Japan
demonstration was witnessed in China and an activist group, which had
planned to sail around the Senkaku Islands, failed to get official
permission. Chinese media merely broadcasted a scene of the Chinese
Coast Guard vessels patrolling around the Senkaku Islands. Experts point
out that the Chinese government also has started thinking about making
relations with Japan better. Now both sides need a cooling off period and
are expected to start taking a pragmatic approach to solve the current
tensions at an appropriate time. In practice, a connection between Japan
and China should be established as soon as possible to prevent an
unexpected clash. Japan should also encourage tourism and civil
exchanges between Japan and China to allow ordinary Chinese to know
and experience the real Japan.
