More than two years after a wave of sexual-assault allegations against him helped
galvanize the #MeToo movement, Harvey Weinstein is behind bars. On
March 11 the former movie producer, 67, was sentenced to 23 years in prison
in New York after being convicted in February on charges of a first-degree
criminal sexual act and third-degree rape. Although more than 80 women have
alleged they were sexually assaulted or harassed by Weinstein, the New York
case focused on two: former production assistant Miriam Haleyi and aspiring
actress Jessica Mann. Many of Weinstein’s accusers applauded the sentence.
“I literally cried tears of amazement, gratitude that the justice system has
worked on behalf of all of his victims today,” tweeted Mira Sorvino. Added
Rosanna Arquette: “Gratitude to all the silence breakers especially Rose
[McGowan] and all survivors of Weinstein.” Hours after the judge delivered the
sentence, Weinstein experienced chest pains and spent five days in a New York
City hospital before being sent to Rikers Island jail on March 16. He is also facing
trial on four felony sexual-assault charges in California, which has begun the
process to extradite him. If convicted of the charges in California, he could face
up to an additional 28 years of prison. —KARA WARNER
