TV | My Brilliant Friend:
The Story of a New Name
A fresh, challenging chapter in the lives of Lila and Lenù
DRAMASeason 2 of this adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s series of
Neapolitan novels takes its subtitle from the second book. The new
name belongs to headstrong, inscrutable Lila (Gaia Girace): She’s
married the awful Stefano Carracci (Giovanni Amura) with no
anticipation of fulfillment. Back from the honeymoon, she meets
her friend Lenù (Margherita Mazzucco) and reveals an eye blacked
from a beating. This brutal shock strengthens her often frayed
relationship with Lenù: The young women exist in some sensitive,
nebulous state between soulmates and frenemies—a mystery that
gives the narrative its power. (HBO, Mondays, 10 p.m.)

HULU | Big Time Adolescence
COMEDYSaturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson plays a feckless
passive-aggressive man-child who sets one bad example
after another for his buddy, 16-year-old high school student
Mo (Griffin Gluck). Time doesn’t quite explain why Mo
would gravitate to this loser—especially since Gluck is
unerringly, incorruptibly sincere—but the film’s deadpan
humor is nicely sustained. (Streaming now)
