Octavia Spencer plays a legendary black businesswoman

DRAMAThe story of Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919) is a remarkable

one. The daughter of former slaves, she became a millionaire selling

her hair-and-scalp treatment Wonderful Hair Grower. She started

a beauty school and factory, employed an army of salespeople and

crowned her achievement by building a mansion dubbed Villa Lewaro.

Her life and career probably don’t need the sort of jarringly fanciful

flourishes you find in this Netflix miniseries, which from time to time

imagines her facing off against her rival in a boxing ring. But Octavia

Spencer plays Walker with a winning air of determination. And as a

bonus you get Tiffany Haddish as her daughter. (Launches March 20)
