OTHER CELEBS
FIGHTING
COVID-19
are now resting at a rented home in Aus-
tralia where they remain under quarantine.
“They’re in good spirits,” says a source.
Two-time Oscar winner Hanks had been
prepping to play Elvis Presley’s manager
Colonel Tom Parker in the biopic, and so
far no one else affiliated with the film is
believed to have the virus. “We are aware
of only the one case of the coronavirus
amongst cast and crew and additionally the
cast member’s wife. Working closely with
the Queensland health department, we
have delayed our start date by approximate-
ly two weeks to allow for their full recovery,”
a film representative says, adding
that Luhrmann and his family are
in isolation at home in Australia.
Before becoming sick, Hanks and
Wilson had visited tourist attractions in
Sydney and even posed for selfies with fans
at Bondi Beach. The premier of Queensland
warned that anyone who had “come in close
contact with Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
will now need to self-isolate and quaran-
tine.” Richard Wilkins, a TV journalist who
interviewed Wilson, contracted the virus
and said he was doing “very well.”
Hanks and Wilson, married almost 32
years, appeared upbeat throughout the
ordeal. (Their four kids were back in the U.S.
and hadn’t been in physical contact with
them for a few weeks.) Wilson, a
singer who performed in the area,
including at the Sydney Opera
House, posted that she had made
a quarantine playlist that includ-
ed songs such as Eric Carmen’s
“All by Myself,” Kelly Clarkson’s
“Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill
You)” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will
Survive.” Hanks also posted a photo of toast
topped with Australia’s famous Vegemite
spread and a stuffed kangaroo holding an
Australian flag from the hospital. “Thanks
to the helpers,” wrote Hanks, a reference
to Mister Rogers’s dictum about looking
for those helping in times of crisis. (Hanks
played Fred Rogers in last year’s A Beauti-
ful Day in the Neighborhood.) Meanwhile,
well-wishes from famous friends like
Reese Witherspoon and Jack Black poured
in, and comedian Whitney Cummings
tweeted, “It’s like it picked the celeb
we cared most about to make a point.”
Seeing
the Sights
Wilson and
Hanks took a
leisurely stroll
at Bondi Beach
on March 7,
before their
diagnosis.
Getting
Treatment
“We are taking it
one day at a time,”
Hanks wrote from
inside the Gold
Coast University
Hospital, where
he and Wilson
were isolated for
five days.
