IN BRIEF

Airline adds extra
Glasgow/London
connection
AIRLINE Aer Lingus Regional is
adding an extra weekday flight
between Glasgow and London
from April. The move will see
the services operated by the
Irish carrier rise from five to six
flights Monday to Friday in a
move that will boost capacity
by 26,000 seats.
Operated by Aer Lingus
Regional franchise partner
Stobart Air, the Dublin service
is popular with leisure and
business passengers travelling
between Glasgow and the
Republic of Ireland’s capital city.
The additional service has
been timed to complement
onward connections to popular
North American destinations
including New York, Boston and
Chicago.

Drinks groups
toast stronger links
DRINKS groups Edrington and
Suntory are strengthening their
existing strategic links with the
Japanese business buying 10
per cent of the Scottish group’s
shares for an undisclosed sum.
This agreement builds on a
partnership between the two
groups that dates back to the
early 1990s.
Suntory has a long-term
shareholding in The Macallan,
the leading brand in Edrington’s
portfolio and the most valuable
single malt Scotch whisky in
the world.
Suntory Holdings has also
been an important distributor
of Edrington brands in several
key international markets over
the past four decades, including
Japan, Germany, Canada and
South Africa; and through
joint ventures in the UK, Spain
and Russia.

QUOTE UNQUOTE

If there is a
Glasgow Accord
from COP26 then
the impact on
the city of the
name being
used would be
incalculable
Stuart Patrick, chief
executive, Glasgow
Chamber of Commerce

There is much to study and act on in this
book that will help to create a great place
to work. Author Colin D Ellis looks at the
six pillars of company culture and sets
out how to build an aspirational vision
for teams and organisations.
Research shows 92 per cent of chief
executives citing cultural change as a

critical driver, but only 16 per cent said
their culture was where it needed to be.
The book argues that in a world of
developing AI and machine learning,
it has never been more important to
develop emotionally intelligent teams.

Boundary sets new one in home security

Audit code bid to improve risk management

HOME security tech specialist
Boundary is working with
the University of Edinburgh
to develop a groundbreaking
outdoor security camera that will
use artificial intelligence (AI) to
spot potential intruders.
The Edinburgh firm is working
with Professor Robert Fisher,
chair of computer vision at the
university, to create the device.
It will use machine vision
to classify events captured
around the home that include
determining whether a person
has good or malicious intent
when they arrive at a property.
The development of the
revolutionary camera is being
part funded by a SMART
grant, funding that is awarded

by Scottish Enterprise for
projects deemed to be highly
experimental. The camera will
use the latest AI chipsets to
detect a potential threat.
When a person displays
behaviour the algorithm is
trained to recognise, the camera

will ask the person to identify
himself. If they refuse, the
camera’s video feeds will be
passed to a human operator for
verification and intervention.
Robin Knox, Boundary co-
founder and CEO, said:“This has
massive potential.”

THE management of risk by
businesses has taken a step
forward with the publication of
a new Internal Audit Code of
Practice.
The new code from the
Chartered Institute of Internal
Auditors aims to increase the
effectiveness of internal audit
following a series of high-profile
collapses linked to governance
deficiencies, including that of
Carillion.
It makes 38 recommendations
for businesses to strengthen their
corporate governance.
These include:
tVOSFTUSJDUFEBDDFTTGPSJOUFSOBM

audit so it is not stopped from
looking at any part of the
organisation it serves and key
management information;
tUIFSJHIUUPBUUFOEBOEPCTFSWF
executive committee meetings;
tBEJSFDUMJOFUPUIF$&0BOE
a direct report to the Audit
Committee Chair to increase the
authority and status of internal
audit;
tUIFEJSFDUFNQMPZNFOUPG
chief internal auditors in every
business even when the internal
audit function is outsourced.
This is to ensure chief internal
auditors have sufficient and
timely access to key management

information and decisions;
tSFHVMBSDPNNVOJDBUJPOBOE
sharing of information by the
chief internal auditor and the
partner responsible for external
audit to ensure both assurance
functions are effective.
The Internal Audit Code of
Practice was developed by an
independent Steering Committee
set up by the Chartered Institute
of Internal Auditors and chaired
by BP’s Audit Committee Chair
Brendan Nelson.
The final version of the
code follows a 12-week public
consultation in which more than
100 stakeholders took part.
