Detailing the Stingerhead with Alphas and Stencils
Now that we have covered the various applications of alphas in ZBrush, let’s apply what you
have learned to a character head. We’ll also look at some design considerations when sculpt-
ing skin texture. We’ll use the creature from Chapter 3, “Designing a Character Bust,” to
demonstrate skin detailing with alphas. You can follow along with your own ZTool or load
the Stingerhead ZTool available on the accompanying DVD.
- Load the Stingerhead model from Chapter 3; this fi le is also available on the accompa-
nying DVD. Step up to the highest subdivision level of the ZTool. Remember that you
will always get the best results when detailing at the highest subdivision levels. If the
subdivision level is set too low, your fi ne strokes will have a jagged, faceted appear-
ance when on the surface.
Featured Artist: Cesar Dacol
Cesar Dacol’s witch image (shown
here) was completely created in ZBrush
from sculpt to details tex ture and ren-
der. Cesar has a fantastic approach to
sculpting that is informed by his tra-
ditional background as a clay sculp-
tor for makeup effects. For more info
on how Cesar details his characters,
see his Gnomon Workshop DVD
“Sculpting Wrinkles in ZBrush.”
