Figure 8.17 The smile blend shape layer

  1. Create a new layer. In this layer we will create a snarl for the character. Turn off the
visibility on the smile layer by clicking the eyeball icon to the right of the layer name.

  2. From the Brush menu select the Move Topological brush. This is a move brush that only
affects vertices that are topologically near one another. This allows you to easily move an
upper lip independently of the lower lip because the lower lip vertices, while close to the
upper lip in the sculpture, are actually far removed in terms of where the polygons are
on the mesh (Figure 8.18). The brush will only affect vertices contiguous to the point of
contact of the brush. That means it is dependent on the topology to determine what parts
of the mesh it will affect. You can increase or decrease the range of the brush’s effect with
the Range slider in the Topological section under Brush → AutoMasking. The traditional
move brush will move any vertices under the red circle of the brush.

Range slider set to 5
affects fewer surrounding faces

Range slider set to 10
has a larger falloff

Figure 8.18 How Move Topological works top, the Range slider set to 5 affects fewer surrounding faces; bottom, the
Range slider set to 10 has a larger falloff.
