executives: Just when you thought you would be recognized for your
achievements, you were scolded. “The concept of limited good pervades
Samsung,” said a marketer. “If someone else is doing well, that means
you’re not doing as well.”


Brian Wallace was furious. At that moment, he wanted nothing more
than to quit.


“Stand up. Stand up,” an executive beside him said, grabbing his arm
and pulling him to his feet.


He realized at that moment that Samsung “is the most bizarro place I’ve
ever seen,” as he told me. Later, back in the United States, Brian raced into
Dale’s office and announced that he was quitting. Dale convinced him to
stay for the moment, but Brian’s mettle was wearing thin.


Fortunately, the heir apparent to the Samsung throne, Jay Lee, had
taken notice of Pendleton’s work and loved it. He flew out to meet his team
for dinner. The U.S. team was protected as long as the ruling family was
behind them—and as long as they could maintain their stellar performance.
