Directions: Determine if the number is rational or irrational. Justify your answer.

  1. √ 6

Solution:
Irrational; on a
calculator, the answer is
2.44948974... which is a
non-terminating
decimal. It does not have
a set pattern. Also, 6 is
not a perfect square.

  1. √ 9

Solution:
Rational; 9 is a perfect
square.

3.
0.18181818....

Solution:
Rational; it is a repeating
decimal.

4.
0.02002000200002...

Solution:
Irrational; even though it
looks like a pattern, it is
not a set pattern.
Therefore, it cannot be
considered a rational
number.

Considerations:

  • Most often, irrational numbers are recorded to the nearest thousandths place.

  • Ask and have a conversation of where irrational numbers can be seen in the real-world.
