Unit 3 · Lesson 1: Scientific Notation

Example # 1 Example # 2
Directions: Convert the given number into scientific notation.

1,500,00 0

Solution:

  • Find the appropriate place for the decimal point,
so that there is a digit in the ones place value.

  • 1 5 0 0 0 0 0

  • If there is no decimal point add one to the right of
the ones place value in order not to change the
    value of the original number.

  • 1 5 0 0 0 0 0.

  • Your new number will be 1.5.

  • The exponent is positive because the original
    number is larger than 1.5.

  • Rewrite the expression in scientific notation.

Answer: 1.5 10×^6

0.02623

Solution:

  • Find the appropriate place for the decimal point so that there
is a digit in the ones place value.

    1. 0 2 6 2 3

  • Notice this time there is a decimal.

    1. 0 2 6 2 3

  • Your new number will be 2.623.

  • The exponent is negative because the original number is
    smaller than 2.623.

  • Rewrite the expression in scientific notation.

Answer: 2.623 10× −^2

Write the standard form: 2.623 × 102
