    notation?


Solution:


  • The decimal needs to be between the 4 and 0.

  • This means that the decimal needs to be moved 7 places to the left: 4. 0

  • The new number is less than the original number. The exponent needs to be a positive.

  1. The chemist found 6.8 × 10 –^8 traces of chlorine in the water. What is the number in
    standard notation?^


Solution:


  • Since the power of 10 is negative, divide by a base of 10. 10 −8= 1018

  • Divide 6.8 by 100,000,000.

  • This means move the decimal to the left. Add zeros if spaces are needed.

  • 6.8 × 10 –8 = 0.000000068


Answer: 0.000000068
