Challenge Problems

Directions: Solve.

  1. Jim argues that there is no way a
scientific notation number can be added
with a whole number. Is Jim correct?
    Explain.

Solution:

  • Incorrect

  • Answers will vary. Sample response: Every whole
    number can be converted into scientific notation;
therefore, every scientific notation number can be
added with a whole number. This can occur by
changing the whole number into scientific
    notation.
    2. What value of x will satisfy the equation?
    Check your answer.

푥푥 + 1.52 × 10^2 = 3.24 × 10^2

Solution:

  • Identify what needs to be moved to the right side
    of the equation.

  • 푥푥 + (1.52 × 10^2 ) = 3.24 × 10^2

  • 푥푥 = 3.24 × 10^2 – (1.52 × 10^2 )

  • 푥푥 = (3.24 – 1.52) × 10^2

  • 푥푥 = 1.72 × 10^2
    Answer: 1.72 × 10^2
