Directions: Simplify the expression. Write solution in scientific notation.

1. (3.6 × 10^9 ) + (0.7 × 10^10 )

Solution:

• Change (0.7 × 10^10 ) into the correct form of scientific notation (7 × 10^9 )


• (3.6 × 10^9 ) + (7 × 10^9 )


• (3.6 + 7) × 10^9


• 10.6 × 10^9 Rewrite in scientific notation.


• 1.06 × 10^10
  Answer: 1.06 × 10^10

2. (1.3 × 10^1 ) × (1.2 × 10^10 )

Solution:

• (1.3 × 1.2) × (10^1 × 10^10 )


• 1.56 × 10 1 +^10


• 1.56 × 10^11
  Answer: 1.56 × 10^11
