Unit 4 · Lesson 5: Simplify Expressions:
Distributive Property
Objective: I will simplify expressions by expanding the distributive property.
Vocabulary Steps:
Expression Equation Variable
ퟓퟓퟓퟓ풙풙ퟓퟓ−ퟗퟗ풙풙+ퟑퟑퟑퟑ=ퟕퟕ풎풎+ퟖퟖퟓퟓ
Term Coefficient Constant
Expand Expressions:
Distributive Property
3(n + 4) + 4(n + 2)
* Read as: 3 groups of (n+4) and 4 groups of (n +2)
(n + 4) +(n + 4)+ (n + 4) + (n + 2)+ (n + 2) +(n + 2) +(n + 2)
7n + 20
Collecting Like Terms:
Distributive Property
3(n + 4) + 4(n + 2)
3n + 12 + 4n + 8
7n + 20
- Expand the expression.
(Use the distributive property) - Collect like terms.
- Simplify the expression.
(Variable term first, then constant)
Example # 1 Example # 2
Directions: Rewrite as a sum and simplify.
2 (푥푥 + 4 )
Solution:
(푥푥 + 4) + (푥푥 + 4)
푥푥 + 푥푥 + 4 + 4
2 푥푥 + 8
3 (푦푦 − 3 )
Solution:
(푦푦− 3) + (푦푦− 3) + (푦푦− 3)
푦푦 + 푦푦 + 푦푦− 3 − 3 − 3
3 푦푦− 9
