Unit 4 · Lesson 11: Write Linear Equations
Objective: I will write and solve linear equations.
Vocabulary Steps:
Read for Understanding:
Read problems slowly. Stop for punctuation and identify
key words that indicate operations.
Define a Variable:
Identify the missing quantity in an equation. Before
writing and solving the equation, choose a variable and
state what the variable represents. Be sure to include
labels or units of measure.
Solve and Check:
Plug the solution back into the equation and check the
accuracy. Does the answer make sense with the question?
Is the answer reasonable?
*Reminder: Is, was, will be all indicate the = sign in a word
problem.
- Read and pause at the punctuation
to record thinking. - Circle keywords that indicate the
operation to use. - Underline the question. This is the
missing variable. - Write the equation and solve.
- Plug the solution into the equation.
- Check for reasonableness.
Example # 1 Example # 2
Directions: Write an equation and solve. Label your answer.
Two more than five times a number is 57.

Hank scored 32 points in a basketball game. This is 4
more than twice as many points as he scored the
week before. How many points did Hank score the
week before?
x = Hank’s points in previous game
Solution:
32 = 2푥푥+ 4
− 4 − 4
28 = 2푥푥
