In this urban oasis, shop some of Cappadocia’s most

luxurious boutiques, or visit the local markets to score

traditional handwoven fabrics and model fairy chimneys.

Take a breather at one of the town’s many cafés: Be sure

to try traditional dishes such as testi kebab (meat or

vegetables cooked in clay pots) and sac kavurma (meat,

often lamb or goat, sautéed with peppers and spices).

IHLARA VALLEY

In ancient times, this valley was a

favorite retreat of Byzantine monks.

Cut by the Melendiz Stream, it's

also one of the best areas to hike, with

more than a hundred rock-carved

churches along the route.

KAYMAKLI

Situated eight levels deep into

the earth, Kaymakli is a famed

underground city that features a

labyrinth of tunnels worthy of full-

day exploration. In ancient times,

the first floor was used as a stable,

while the other levels included

living quarters, a church, and even

graves. Carve out a day to walk

ancient history.

UCHISAR

Uchisar, a charming village located

6 miles from Nevsehir (where the

airport is situated), is a perfect

example of Cappadocia’s otherworldly

architecture. Dating back to the

Byzantine period, the imposing Uchisar

Rock Castle is the best backdrop for

photos. After getting your picture fill,

stay in one of the famous luxury “cave

hotels” in the area (boutique offerings

carved out of the natural landscape)

for an enchanted evening.
