Is there a more divisive music genre than jazz? Whether you
love it or hate it, what’s certain is that it’s everywhere this month.
First up, in La La Land director Damien Chazelle’s first foray
into TV. Eight-part Netflix series The Eddy (out 8 May) revolves
around a Parisian jazz club and its owner, played by Moonlight’s
André Holland, alongside The Hate U Give’s Amandla Stenberg.
Penned by This Is England’s Jack Thorne, expect this musical
drama to see off any residual winter blues.
On the big screen, Soul is Pixar’s next big hit (out 19 June).
Directed by Oscar-winning animator Pete Docter (Inside Out
and Up), it sees a middle-school music teacher – voiced by Jamie
Foxx– whodreamsofplaying at a legendary New York jazz club.
When his soul is separated from his body,
a moving journey begins, which will
motivate us all to fulfil our dreams. Aww.
Next, fans of Zadie Smith and Andrea
Levy won’t want to miss Louise Hare’s
enthralling debut novel – This Lovely
City (out now) follows a jazz musician in
195Os Windrush London and the dance
halls of Soho. Finally, south Londoner Ego
Ella May releases her jazz-rooted debut
album Honey For Wounds (out May).
