JuulmovedtoCopenhagenwithher
scientistmother,whohadlanded
a jobattheuniversity.(Herparents
weredivorcedbythistime.)When
shetoldhernewclassmatestheSpam
story, they were incredulous.


ButJuulwasequallyamazedat
thecasualwayherclassmateswould
wastefood.“People’sparentswould
makethempackedlunches,which
theywouldtossinthebinbeforegoing
toMcDonald’s,”sherecalls.
When Juul first
visited a Danish
supermarket, she
was astonished by
theamountoffood
ondisplay.Spending
timeasaninternata
bakery,shewastak-
enabacktoseethe
breadleftoverattheendofeachday
putinbagsandthrownout.
Whenshefinishedschool,Juul
wenttocollege,whereshestudied
journalismandgraphicdesign,and
thenbeganworkingasafreelance
