This Is a Stick Up
When a brilliant makeup artist
(and former hairstylist) is married
to a man with more hair follicles
than seems possible, a styling
product is inevitable. Investigative
reporter (and famous person)
Patrick Dempsey gets the scoop
from Jillian Dempsey.
Patrick: Wifey, tell me, what makes
the Roadie different from all the
other pomades in the world?
Jillian: It’s a new twist on old-school
pomade (think Dax, Murray’s): a
twist-up stick. May I point out that
the reason behind the name is
that it’s for traveling? So it’s smaller.
Patrick: It’s your first men’s product,
but women can use it too, right?
Jillian: Funny you are so
concerned about us ladies!
Why yes, I use it daily to pinch my
ends. I also do a move I named
the “pancake”: clapping the flaps
of my hair between my hands.
Patrick: What was your inspiration
for the Roadie?
Jillian: When I owned a trendy West
Hollywood salon, many moons
ago—you might remember we met
there—we used a stick pomade. It’s
a lost art that needs rediscovering.
Patrick: If I wasn’t the inspiration,
I can ask again. I’ve got all day.
Jillian: Your hair is like a child
throwing a tantrum. I am always on
the hunt for something to manage
it. I was baffled why it didn’t exist.
Patrick: Last question: What
should we have for dinner?
Jillian: Rice bowls.
The lemon- and
leather-scented
styler works
best on dry hair.
Since it’s a wax,
make sure to
warm it up in
your hands first,
says Jillian.
This month marks a milestone in the 34-year
history of the scrunchie, the hair accessory of
Olympians and first ladies, and Hollywood’s finest,
like Madonna and Jason Momoa. This humble piece
of elasticized fabric is now getting the high-end-
fragrance treatment. Aerin Lauder teamed up with
LoveShackFancy to create floral-printed hair
ties that can be scented with her new hair perfume,
Wild Geranium (an energizing mix of pink pepper,
daffodil blooms, lemon, and, obviously, geraniums).
A spritz on one of the organza scrunchies will
keep the fragrance tied to you all day—or at least
until you decide to let your hair down. —PAIGE STABLES
