Puremagnetik have always been
something of a go-to outfit for ultra-
affordable and unusual lo-fi plugins,
offering excellent avant garde synths and
effects like Speektra and Mimik. Not
content to merely provide artists with the
tools to make music, they’ve now
launched the Puremagnetic music label.
To celebrate their new venture, they’re
offering up this pair of plugins inspired by
artists that appear on their new imprint.
First up is Expanse, a noise and drone
generator that takes its inspiration from

Into a Bright Land, a limited cassette
release from Larum – aka Puremagnetik
sound designer Micah Frank.
Expanse spits out deep, droning
textures and evocative atmospheres, all
under the control of an intuitive interface.
Driftmaker is likewise associated with
Puremagnetik artist Blankfor.ms (aka
Tyler Gilmore), whose sold-out cassette

Works for Tape and Piano served as the
template for this unusual delay-based
‘disintegration device’. Granular
mangling fans will find much to love here.
Puremagnetik get full marks for
creativity here – it’s good artist
marketing, and inspiring musically. New
music, free plugins – what’s not to like?

plugins that have earned the
company rave reviews and a loyal
user base. Their REAMP
saturation processor looks to be
no exception, offering high-
quality models of multiple tape machines and
amps. FreeAMP is a significantly cut-down
version – at least on the surface. In actuality, all
the power of REAMP is here, but as a monolithic
combo of all of the developer’s favourite profiles.
Limited to three knobs... and a lot of attitude.

requires you to
download and install yet another bit of software
just to access the former. However, we can make
an exception when the software on offer is as
good as this stripped-down version of Acustica’s
Titanium mastering combo. BASSTard provides a
version of Titanium’s EQ module tailored
specifically for low frequencies. With only Boost
and Attenuation controls alongside a Low
Frequency selection switch, it won’t tax your
brain, but might blow your mind. And speakers.

need? This free version
of Thenatan’s
commercial plugin of
the same name offers a whopping 80 808/Sub
Kick and sub bass sounds, along with a
smattering of control with which they can be
tweaked, including Glide, Attack and Release,
High Pass Filter and Master Volume. The crazy
thing is, this collection of 80 sounds is the ‘lite’
version – the premium incarnation has an
incredible 1000 presets onboard!

GSiMrTraMp

Think of an electric piano, and one name
comes to mind – and it isn’t Wurlitzer! Yet
Wurly’s 200A has earned a place in rock
history thanks to its use on songs by
Supertramp. MrTramp distills the sound of
the Wurly in a simple cross-platform plugin.
Like a number of freeware classics,
MrTramp began life as a SynthEdit-based

creation for Windows users. However, the
second incarnation of this smooth operator
was re-coded from the ground up in C++ and
made available for both Windows and OSX
environments. Always worth a play,
