What the racers say...

shoulder as you ride; only lighter,
and with quicker reactions.
When the system activates, a
compressed-gas canister inflates
the airbag in milliseconds.
“You don’t even notice it in the chaos
of a crash,” says 2019 BSB rider, Ryan
Vickers. “Two days ago, I crashed at
160mph, while testing in Spain. Without
D-Air, I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t have
been able to get up and walk away.”
D-Air instantly recognises the
dynamics of various different falls,
such as highsides, slides and rolls. In
a highside, for example, it registers
the rear wheel sliding then regaining
traction. The airbag instantaneously
triggers while the rider is in the air,
offering extensive protection to all key
areas for when they inevitably hit the
asphalt. The road version also triggers
in head-on and lateral collisions.
This is space-age technology at its
very best. Unsurprising, when you
realise that Dainese’s expertise is so
sought-after that the company also
works closely with the MIT Institute on

clothing for astronauts.
But D-Air technology goes further. All
the data it amasses can be downloaded
as telemetry, recording placement,
speed, lap times and acceleration,
making it perfect for professional
racers and trackdays addicts alike.

‘I’ve always wanted

to wear Dainese

since being a kid.

Who wouldn’t?’
Bradley Ray, BSB rider
“The suit itself is as flexible as a normal suit, you’d never tell
there’s an airbag system in there. The weight is very similar
too; it’s just knowing that the extra safety’s there if you do
tumble down the road.
“I’ve had a few crashes and every time I’ve been surprised
by how quickly and reliably the system activates. It knew
something wasn’t right and triggered before I hit the ground.
I’ve never had any issues with it going off accidentally, either,
despite a few lairy situations!
“When it goes off it sort of flexes and grips your shoulder,
chest and back areas really tightly, but your arms are still
free to move.
“Since I’ve been racing, I’ve always wanted to be in a D-Air
suit. That way, I know if a big crash does occur, then the
safety is the best it can be.”

“I started wearing Dainese in 2009, and I fell in love with
the boot-to-leathers combination. I had so much feeling
and movement. I felt free with my feet on the bike and was
immediately comfortable.
“Over the years I’ve had to change to other suppliers
through the team I was with but as soon as it was back in
my control, I wanted to be with Dainese. This is my fourth
consecutive season with them.
“It gives you 100% confidence when you have airbag
protection. Once you’ve had that first deployment, you
never want to be without it again.
“To have the airbag go off before you hit the floor gives
such peace of mind. I’ve had six deployments and not one
injury. Comfort’s no problem, even in eight-hour races,
where we can be on the bike for an hour.”
