Have you heard of Earth Hour?
It’s become super popular in my
hometown, but when I mentioned
it to members of our team here in
New York City, only one person knew
about it! In case you are also in the
dark, I thought I’d share. The idea of
Earth Hour is simple: One hour, no
power. On the last Saturday of March,
everyone turns off the lights for just
60 minutes to conserve energy.
When I originally learned about
Earth Hour, I thought, This seems
pretty easy; I should probably try to
do it. At the time, I didn’t realize how
fun and romantic it would be.
That first year, I was at a dinner
party when I happened to remember
that this was the night. It was already
8 p.m., so we all raced around looking
for candles, then matches to light
them. We did a little countdown at
8:30 and flipped the switches. So
magical! The hour flew by filled with
good old-fashioned conversation, feel-
ing cozy as a scene from Little House
on the Prairie. Someone looked out the
window and noticed glowing lights in
neighboring windows. We were almost
sad when the 60 minutes were over.
No one wanted to power back up.
Now Earth Hour is a yearly tradi-
tion our family looks forward to like a
holiday. We usually have people over
for dinner to celebrate, but it’s equally
