which I excused because we can all
agree that’s just medicine. I would
show up at speaking events with
no makeup on and feel almost
like I should apologize. Like it was
disrespectful
—
how dare a woman do
that? I actually enjoy makeup, so I
spent a lot of that time trying to decide
what was right for me. Then I heard
Alicia tell a story about how Adam
Levine had walked into her dressing
room while she was putting on lipstick
and said, ‘I thought Alicia didn’t wear
makeup.’ She turned to him and said,
‘I do what the f*** I want.’ I was like,
Oh, that’s it. Saying, ‘Oh, makeup was a
cage, so I’m not wearing it anymore’ is
putting yourself into another cage.”
Ages 41 to 43:
Freedom
“I’m trying to spend the second part
of my journey being the subject of my
life instead of the object of other
people’s lives. I want to tell you it’s
gotten easier to feel that way, but
the truth is that I feel like it’s gotten
harder
—
or at least I think about it
more. The difference is that I don’t
wear makeup every day. I will not
go back to feeling like I have to
wear makeup because I’m aging
or because I still have adult acne
(which I do) or because my skin is
like 16 shades of red (which it is).
When I start thinking I have to wear
makeup to cover this ‘imperfection’
or that one
—
that’s when I know
it’s a cage and I call BS on myself.
I don’t do what I have to do
—
I do
what I want. So if I want to wear
makeup, I wear makeup. Freedom
is doing what I want each day, each
month, whether that’s wearing a
bunch of makeup or wearing none.
When the freedom comes in, that is
perfection. That is living untamed.”
