contemplateda sidecareer

gunslingerwhobreaksthemouldin
his 1987 novelTheCommitments.
Whenthe 1991 filmwasin production,
gallaghermetdirectorAlanParkerto
discussa screentestforanotherrole,
thatofseasonedsaxophonist“Joey
Thelips”,whowouldberecastasan
olderguitarplayer.“itwasmanna
fromheaven,”saysDonalgallagher.

offtheroad,andthiscouldcompletely
changehislife.i eventuallygothimto

Alan.Hecameoutafterandsaid,‘i’ve
giventhemVan’snumber...’i thought,
‘Whatthefuck!’”

beingtoldwhattodo,sotherewasa lotofgriefmakingthatlP.Very
tenseandunpleasant.I feltforbothofthem.Intheend,
somebodyelsecameinandmixedthealbum.I don’t
thinkRoryeverwantedtobea mainstreamstar.He
neverwantedtopeak.”
“Hewaswearingtoomanyhatsforhisowngood,”
saysDonalGallagher.“Hewashisownproducer,
songwriter,performer,arrangerandessentiallyhisown
manager.Hewasinvolvedineveryelement.Hewould
frustrateartdesignersbycallingthingsoffatthe
eleventhhour,orinsistalbumsberecutontheother
sideoftheworld.It becameextreme,almosta control-
freakscenario.Assoonashehaddeliveredanalbum,
hewantedit outthenextday.Thelabelwouldsuggest
delayingalbumsuntilafterChristmas,orredoinga
songsoit wouldbea hitsingleintheStates,andRory
wouldgoberserk.”
Thefollowingyear,hescrappedanentirealbum
recordedinSanFranciscowithelliotMazer,in
sessionsposthumouslyreleasedasNotesFromSan
Francisco. “Itjustdidn’tclickforhim,”saysDonal.
“Whenthealbumwascompletedandmastered,he
justcouldn’tlivewithit.”
“ThatwasmeanttobetheAmericanalbum,”says
McAvoy.“WerecordedinSanFranciscoandit was
fantastic.I wenthomeforChristmas;Rorystayedon
andgothisfingertrappedina taxidoor.It feltlikeit
wasvoodootime,andheturnedhisbackonthe
wholeproject.Hewasn’thappywiththepoliticsof
theband,hewasn’thappywithRod,whowasvery
outspokenattimesaboutthingslikepay.It cameto
a head,andRorychangedeverything.”
GallagherdispensedwithDe’athandMartinand
emergedwitha new,leantrio.InSanFrancisco,he’d
seentheSexPistols’finalconcertatWinterlandin
January1978.“Helovedtherawenergyofthewhole
thing,”saysMcAvoy.“Ithinkmaybethat’swhyhe
decidedtogobacktobeinga three-piece.”
McAvoywasretained,whileTedMcKenna,
formerlyofTheSensationalAlexHarveyBand,
joinedasdrummer.“AttheendoftheauditionatAIR
studios,Roryandhisbandhelpedmedowntothecar
withmydrums,”McKennarecalled.“Hewas
standingtherewithmysnaredrumandpeoplewere
askinghimforautographs.That’sthekindofguyhe
was.JekyllandHyde.Hewasa quiet,genteel,
humbleguy,butwhenhewentonstagehewas
tota llyd r iven.”


The powerhouse trio can be heardtodevastatingeffect
on the 1980 live album Stage-Struck. “It’ssohardto
capture that kind of energy in thestudio,”saidMcKenna.
“Rory was a live animal, that washisnaturalhabitatas
a musician. He lived for it.” Suchdedicationtohiscraft
engendered a kind of tunnel vision.“Rorywouldnever
take a holiday,” says Donal. “Corkwastheoneplacehe
could chill, have a long country walkandtakehisease,
but it wouldn’t work for him in london.He’dendupback
in Denmark Street going throughtheguitarstores...”

y the ’80s,thingswereslowing
down. Following1982’sJinx,
Gallagher partedwithChrysalis
and released justtwomorerecordsin
his lifetime: Defenderin 1987 andFresh
Evidence in 1990,bothonthesmallCapo
label.Themanwhotreasuredspontaneity
spentincreasinglylongperiodsinthe
studio,“goingdowntherabbithole”,
accordingtoDonalGallagher.
“Hegotlosta bitduringthe’80s,”says
McAvoy.“Musichadchanged,therewasa
lotofelectronicmusicRorycouldn’tgeton
with.Weweretouringalltheseplaceslike
yugoslavia,Hungary,thathewouldn’tdo
before.Hewasstillplayingtogreataudiences,butit
musthavebeena bitsoul-destroying.Theedgehad
beentakenoff;hedidn’thavequitethesamedrive.”
Ashiscareerplateaued,hishealthbeganto
deteriorate,througha mixtureofalcoholabuseand
a growingdependenceonsedatives.“Wewereall
heavydrinkers,”saysDonal.“WhatI didn’t
understanduntillaterwastheissueofmedication.
Hesufferedbadlyfromfearofflying,andfromthe
claustrophobiaofanaircraft.Thealcoholwastaking
himupfromthetranquilisersthatgothimonto
aircraft,andkepthimtouring.Bythemid-’80s,and
intothe’90s,it wasbeginningtotakeitstoll.”
“IsawhimplayattheFleadhatGlasgowGreenin
1992 andI couldn’tbelieveit,”TedMcKennarecalled.
“Ijustthought,‘Thisisn’ttheRoryGallagherI know.’
I sawDonalafterwardsanddidn’tknowwhattosay.”
GallagherplayedhislastshowonJanuary10,1995,
inRotterdam,wherehecollapsedonstage.He
cancelledtheremainingdatesandinMarchwas
admittedtohospitalinlondontoreceivea liver
transplant.Aftertwomonthsinintensivecare,he
diedfromanMRSAinfectiononJune14,1995.
It wasa prematureendtoa lifededicatedalmost
exclusivelytomusic.“Hewasalwaysveryprivate
abouthisprivatelife,”saysMcAvoy.“Itwaspretty
solitaryforRory,offtheroad.”Gallagherlovedfilm,
enjoyedsnookerandpainting,buthiscareerwasall-
consuming.Hehadnosignificantromanticpartners.
“Hiscommitmentthroughouthislifewastobethe
bestmusicianhecouldbe,”saidMcKenna.“Rory
livedhislifethroughhisguitar.It’sverydifficultto
finda substituteinreallifeforthatkindofedge.”
Therewas,hisfriendsagree,a protectivelayertohis
personalitynobodycouldpenetrate.In2003,oneof
severalposthumousrecords,WheelsWithinWheels,
wasreleasedwitha paintingbytheartistDavid
Oxtobyonthecover.“Itwaslikea deathmask,”says
DonalGallagher.“DavidtoldmeRorywastheone
subjecthejustcouldn’tget,sohehadtoleavetheeyes
closed.I understandthat.eventhoughhewasmy
brother,therewasalwayssomethingextraordinary
abouthim.Hewassomethingofanotherworld.”
