Evolution, glacial in its attainment, hid itself from every scientist’s
view until an extraordinarily perceptive naturalist grasped its grandeur.
The inventiveness of Leonardo, the ingenuity of Newton, the imagination
of Einstein, and the perception of Darwin could not possibly have
conceived of the “most exalted object” that will be Homo electrus.
Millions of years of slight adaptations and, depending upon your
philosophical outlook, accidental genetic modifications, can be upended in
a matter of hours in a Cambridge laboratory or London operating room. It
seems likely that most disease-treating implants will no longer be needed
once we conquer degeneration and genetically-dependent disease. Today,
the cosmos of implant manufacturers, surgeons, hospitals, insurance
companies, governments, and governing bodies are endeavoring together,
using a line and race of inventions to alleviate the necessities of life. In the
near future, these selfsame federations will collaborate and defy the laws
of gravity, shake off the limitations of being Homo sapiens, and
powerfully embrace a grand new life.
