At the southern end of the Grand Canal, and surrounded by lush

countryside, Hangzhou has long been famous for its beautiful

gardens, bridges, and temples. Since the arrival of the canal, the

city has grown prosperous, too. Along the busy quayside between

the steep Zhong’an and E’ya bridges, shopkeepers beckon well-to-

do passersby to browse their tempting displays, while sharp-witted

merchants from foreign shores strike deals with local traders.
