Matteo Ricci, a Catholic priest, is traveling to Beijing to meet the Wanli Emperor. Four rivers flow into the Grand Canal, making this a major transportation hub.
A soldier still in uniform is just home from the war in Korea. A Japanese spy is collecting information from local people to send back to the Emperor of Japan.
At the grain inspection building, officials check the quality of the grain being shipped to Beijing.
A Vital Communications Link
Tongzhou, 1600 ce
The clatter of hooves and the rumble of wheels create a constant hum on
Tongzhou’s broad Yongtong Bridge, as an endless stream of people, animals,
and vehicles pass across en route to and from Beijing. Paved with granite,
the sturdy bridge is one of four that surround and defend the capital and
is also an important waymarker for the countless cargo boats that squeeze
through its high middle arch, bringing grain to the imperial city.
