How to Be a Conscious Eater

STEP 3: CROSS-REFERENCE THE TWO.
PROCEED ACCORDINGLY.
The International Food Information Council Foundation has
found that more than half of consumers consult the ingredi-
ents list or Nutrition Facts panel often or always before making
a food purchasing decision. Cross-referencing them gives you
a good overall picture of a product’s nutritional value. For
example, you might check the amount of added sugar in the
Nutrition Facts panel but then consult the ingredients list to
see what other company the sugar has—if it’s nuts, seeds,
whole grains, and so on, as opposed to enriched flour, partially
hydrogenated oil, artificial colors, etc., then that sugar might
be worth it.
