Hungariandoctor Ignaz Semmelweis in 1847. Hewas
working atahospital in Austria, trying to workkout
why morewomen died from childbirthint he ppartof
the hospital run by doctors than in thepartoftthe
hospital run by midwives (people trainedtoheelp
womengive birth). He asked doctorstowash ttheir
handswhenmoving between patients becausehe
thought they mightbespreadinggerms.Once they
starteddoingthis, thenumberofd eaths starteedto

One person’s rubbish

is another person’s art

or any artist,atrip to MountEverest is bound to
provide ideas for new work. It is the world’s highest
mountain and is in the Himalayanrange in Asia.
However,for Welsh artistPeter Kettle,itw asn’t just
the stunning viewsthat inspired him. Itwasthe
rubbish.Kettle collected litter whiletrekking across
the mountain,and used it to makecollages of the
region. He says he mostly used wrappers and
left-behind tent material to create the art, and hopes
to inspirepeople toreuse andrecyclewhat theycan.

ThePsammeadis now
returning inafilm
adaptation of that book,
bringing the story to lifeoncemore.
ActorTeddie-RoseMalleson-Allen,
who playsthe starringrole of Ros in the
newversion, toldThe Week Juniorit wasan
interestingchallengetoact alongsideaCGI
creature. (CGI stands forcomputer-generated
imagery.) Shesaid,“They had thiscreature, a
spongy toy,thatshowed us whatitw ould look

like. Therewas thenaspeaker that would play
his lines and wecould hear his tone,but it ’s
quitestrangebecause youcan’t work out
what itsexpression is goingtobe.”
A ntral part of the plot
he newfilm is the
Psammead’s
wish-granting
abilities, and
Malleson-Allen
says ascene
herethe
acters learn to fly
ingtofilm. She
explained,“Thereweregiantrobot
arms that would go over your clothes.You
felt likeyou wereactually flying.” Malleson-
Allen, who acted in the2016remake of
Swallows andAmazons,said she lovesbeing
in adventurefilms because they encourage
viewers to play together.
