orethan650 young people from aroundthe UKtook
part in judo’sBritish School Championshipsrece ntly. At
the English Institute of SportinSheffield, theycompeted for
awards in their individualcategories, and to win points for
their schools. The team from Blessed EdwardOldcorne
CatholicCollege, inWorcester,England, werecrowned
overall champions after winning two golds andabronze
medal.TavistockCollege, from Devon, England, weresecond,
and DarrickWood School, fromLondon,came third.
The British School Championships takeplaceevery year.
Each judoka–which is the word for ajudo ath

qualify for thecompetition first or be atacertain judograde.
They competed in their schoolyeardivision,which ranged
from Year 6toYear13, and in different weightcategories.
Competitions alsotook placefor visually impaired judoka
and for those with learning disabilities.
Among those who won awards were RexCheung
(Preston Hedges Primary School),Taylor Chrisp (Malvins
Close Academy), Zara Howe(Three Bridges Primary School)
and Evan Anderson(Castl eView Enterprise Academy).

Sports Awards (BEDSAs), the pair
wereawarded the sportswoman
and sportsman of the year titles.
The awardscelebrate black and
minority ethnic achievements.
Last year,Asher-Smith won three
AthleticsWorld Championships
medals. Archer helped England
win the CricketWorld Cup.

submit.Arefereewatches, and
finishesthe matchifthis
happens.Eachjudocontest
starts and ends with judokas
bowing to each otherasasign
ofrespectand friendship.
