Britishcompany has created agame designed

to help youngpeople with cysticfibrosis to do

theirbreathingexercises.The game,Archipelayo,

is beingtested by youngpeople in the UK to check

whether it has positive medical effects.

Cystic fibrosisisaconditionthat affects the lungs

and digestivesystem, and morethan 10,500 people

in th eUKhaveit. Some of the effects of cystic

fibrosiscan beeased by doingregular breathing

exercises. To help,agroup of gamesdesign students

from AbertayUnive rsityinDundee, Scotland,

formedacompany, Konglomerate Games, to work

on Archipelayo.Itt urns theexercises intomini-

games, tracking howaplayeris doingwithagadget

that attachestot heir breathing device.

“Around 150 children areparticipatinginthe

clinicaltestingacross the UK, primarilyatLondon’s

GreatOrmondStreet Hospital.The early signs are

quite positive,”says JamieBankhead, who is the

bossofthe gamecompany.“Ourdata tellsusthat

the average usage timeforaplayer is 20 minutes,

and that isfantastic; 80% of the breathsthey are

taking aredeemed to be good quality–which is

greatnews.”
