Step 16: Add a new layer above
the generated layer style layers and
name it “Front Shadows.” Clip this
layer (Layer>Create Clipping Mask) to
the stack and set the mode to Mul-
tiply. Grab the Brush tool and use a
Soft Round tip with the brush size set
to 250 px, the Hardness at 0%, and
brush Opacity at 20% in the Options
Bar. Hold down the Option (PC: Alt)
key to temporarily switch to the Eye-
dropper tool, and click to sample a
dark purple from the background sky.
Then gently paint in shadow areas
across the right sides of the front spi-
ral shapes.
Step 17: Now create a layer for the
“Front Highlights” and clip it onto
the stack. Set the blending mode
to Screen and sample a soft pinkish
yellow color from the sky to paint in
the highlights on the left side of the
structure.
Step 18: With the front section com-
plete, the back section needs the same
treatment. Fortunately, we’ve already
pasted in the layer styles from the
Lighthouse Body Front layer. Repeat
the process of converting the layer
styles to layers, as we did in Step 14
(no need to mask the layer styles this
time, as this is the backside, and the
concerning edges are hidden away);
adding an additional Bevel & Emboss,
as we did in Step 15; and then finally
clipping in Shadows and Highlights
layers and painting them, as we did in
Steps 16 and 17. The focus here is to
get the shadows correct. The deepest
shadows should be directly under the
front spiral shapes.
