STEP FIVE:
CREATE A HUE/SATURATION
ADJUSTMENT LAYER
With the selection still active, go back
to the Layers panel, and drag the
saturation mask layer into the Delete
Layer icon (trash can) at the bottom
of the panel because we don’t need
it anymore.
Make sure that the selection is still
active and then, click on the Create
New Adjustment Layer icon (half-
black/half-white circle) at the bottom
of the Layers panel and choose Hue/
Saturation. Photoshop will use the
selection to generate the layer mask for
the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.
In the Properties panel (Win dow>
Properties), increase the Saturation
to enhance the colors. You’ll notice
that the colors will only be boosted
on the areas that already have colors.
For this image, we raised the Satura-
tion to +100.

STEP FOUR: USE CHANNELS TO
EXTRACT THE SATURATION MASK
This filter creates a weird-looking image that doesn’t make any sense. If you
look at the Channels panel (Window>Channels), however, this image is full
of info. The Red channel here represents hue, the Green channel represents
saturation, and the Blue channel represents brightness. This explains our choice
of HSB.
Hold down the Command key (PC: Ctrl) key and click on the thumbnail of
the Green channel. Now we have a selection based on the saturation levels in
the image (see image above). The more color an area has, the more it’s selected.
