elebrated characters including MaryPoppins
andPaddington Bear have appeared inLondon’s
Leicester Squaretohonour some of the most loved
film stars of all time. Eight differentstatueswill be
displayed in the squareuntil this summer,each
honouringadifferentperiod of filmmaking history.
Thefamous duo Laurel and Hardy,whomade
morethan1 00 comedy films between 1927 and
1950, appear together,and thecartoon character
Bugs Bunnycanbeseen chompingacarrot. He first
appeared on screen 80 years ago.Theremaining
statuesre resent GeneKell,the starof the 1952
musicalSingin’in theRain,and thefictional
characters Batman, Mr Bean andWonderWoman.
Leicester Squarehas hadacloseconnection
with the film industry sincethe area’s first cinema
opened in 1930.To this day it is one of the most
popular locations for film premieres in the UK; stars
frequently turn up at its cinemas to see their films
for the first time.
Hugh Bonneville, who has appeared in both
Paddingtonfilms, said the statue of the bear “really
doesrepresentLondon and strangerscoming to
town, and the welcome thatLondoncangive them”.

TotoroandKiki’ sDeliver yService,it’sagood one
to try next. It actually started life asashort film
made foratheme park, but the storywas
expanded intoalonger featurefilm. It tells of
agirl called Haru who savesacat from bein
run over.However,she soon discovers
that there’smoretothiscatthanshe
firstthought. Lasting only 75
minutes, this isanice, short and
quite lovely movie.
