pple is facing abig bill after agreeing to pay up to

£390 million to settleaUSlegal case. It had been

accused of deliberately slowing down older iPhones

with its software. Thecompany had beenfacing a

lawsuit (a dispute that is taken tocourt) on behalf

of iPhone owners in the US, who hadcomplained

that when they downloaded new versions of Apple’s

iOS software, their phonesranless smoothly.Some

peop le said Apple did this to makepeople buy new

phones, which it denies.

Apple has now settled the lawsuit, which means

it agreed to pay money to affected users, to avoid

the case going tocourt. People who owned iPhones

released between 2014 and 2016–thatmeans

various versions of the iPhone6and iPhone 7, as

well as the iPhone SE–and who downloaded

certain new versions of the iOS software,could

get apayment of $25 (nearly £20) per phone, under

the settlement. Sadly for UK iPhone owners, the

settlement only applies to people in the US.

This isn’t the first time iPhone slowdowns have

been in the news. In 2017, Apple apologised for

slowing down some older iPhones, saying itwas

to protect their batteries.
