IMPERIAL AMBITION
Napoleon Bonaparte
crowned himself the
emperor of France in
1804 and proceeded to
get every great power
in Europe involved in
the Napoleonic Wars.
Forced to abdicate and
exiled to the island of
Elba in 1814, he briefl y
regained power the
following year. Three
months later he was
defeated at the Battle of
Waterloo by the armies
of Britain and Prussia
and banished to Saint
Helena, a British island
in the South Atlantic.
